PSA: Books Are HOT

Let me start this post by saying, "THANK GOD for Bella & Gigi Hadid!" I mean, I have spent the better part of my past 28 years with a book in my immediate proximity, but what I was really missing  was two supermodels making reading "HOT."  Now before I write anything else and sound SUPER  jaded, please understand that I'm not. What I am reacting to is this INSANE TWEET from the New York Post.

I've always loved reading like Rory Gilmore "I always have at least 3 books on me at any given time" reading obsessed.  If I'm being exact with when my reading obsession started, I was in the 7th grade when I read Princess Diaries for the first time.  It was pure magic and I ripped through those books like wildfire. Since then, I've read anything and everything I could get my hands on that vaguely seemed like it would interest me.   I can say that I am the better for all the books I've read and the lives I have lived in them...except for maybe Twilight. Those books made me hella sarcastic and caused eye strain due to excessive eye rolling, but I digress.  The point I'm getting at is reading is always super cool, and that New York Post tweet can BITE ME.  To quote @luleeaberra, "Literacy is so hot right now" so to help you stay ahead of the fashion trends AND the "LIT" trends, I'm going to share with you my favorite recent reads so you too can be cool like the Hadids.

Step 1: When picking a book to match your look think about "What kind of tone do I want to set?" Because tone is everything. You can't just match a murder mystery with a miniskirt that's called foreshadowing. Kidding. You can wear whatever you want as long as you remember the immortal words of Georgia and Karen from My Favorite Murder, "Stay Sexy. Don't Get Murdered." Here's a list of super good reads that will look good with whatever you chose to wear (in no order in particular order):

  1. To All The Boys I've Loved Before Series: To All the Boys I've Loved Before, P.S. I Stille Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean

I feel like we're all really familiar with the TATBILB series especially since they made one of the best movies of 2018 AND they are making the sequel (woot-woot)!! Basically, these books are perfect if you need a fix until the second movie comes out or if you want to feel that good romantic warm squishy feeling in your stomach.

  2. The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

This brilliant novel leaves me speechless. All I can do is encourage everyone to read it and pass it along to another reader.

  3. The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

So if you scroll through this list you'll find a lot of books with a magical element to them. This book is no different. That's because I read so many news stories that I really need a happy something to bring the bounce back in my step. Think "what if fairytales came to life??" and you would be on the right track. To quote Karen & Georgia, "Get a job. Buy your own shit. Stay out of the forest." This book travels well especially if you like me have ZERO intention of heading into the woods.

  4. Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Say it with me, "MORE MAGIC. MORE FUN."

  5. Furyborn by Claire Legrand

Described as "Feminist Fantasy" this story is about two strong queens discovering their destiny. I'm in the middle of reading this book, but I can definitely tell you that it's SOOOO GOOD!!!!

  6. WorkParty by  Jaclyn Johnson

Let's take a break from magical fantasy and talk about the other types of books I read because I also read biographies, how to, poetry, short stories, flash fiction, blog posts, etc. Jaclyn Johnson is the Founder & CEO of Create & Cultivate, probably my favorite conference series of ALL TIME. It's an amazing and supportive environment for female entrepreneurs. One of  Jaclyn Johnson's favorite quotes is, "Your reputation is your resumé." This book is full of work and life goodness and guidance! Read it. Be inspired. Make plans.

  7.  All Souls Series: A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life

Vampires. Let's talk about them but only briefly because they are consuming. As previously mentioned, I hate the Twilight series. I've read them and seen the movies. While there are SO MANY problems with the books my number ONE complaint is the deeply unhealthy relationship between Bella and Edward. He is controlling and manipulative. However, this isn't about that this is about vampires and witches in the All Souls series. I have accepted that all vampires are a little obsessive about their food (humans) because how could they not be. This is series is a fun and absurd read.

  8. One Day in December by Josie Silver.

Technically a Christmas romance novel, but I don't care. It is romantic. It is sweet. I read it in a day and it gave me happy butterflies.

  9. Beautiful Creatures Series: Beautiful Creatures, Beautiful Darkness, Beautiful Chaos, and Beautiful Redemption

So many feels about the series. Not only is it a great read, but it's also a really fast read. Think witches and true love!

  10. The Dry

One of the best murder mystery novels I've ever read. I love true crime. I don't know if you can tell because I've only quoted My Favorite Murder twice, but I am a huge fan. I love solving mysteries and this story kept me guessing. It's dark and twisty, but a rewarding story. Pairs well with a beach and applying sunscreen every 4 hours.
